Raleigh – Senate Republicans are scrambling to find answers on health care and their most vulnerable member had a new idea this week: recycle and revisit the failed 2017 plans he pushed that would gut protections for preexisting conditions and raise premiums for North Carolinians.

In an interview with Politico, Tillis said about the new Republican health care agenda, “If you look at the proposals we were cycling through when we were on the brink of repealing Obamacare, it’ll be probably those…”

Those proposals – The Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA) and Graham-Cassidy – were disastrous for North Carolinians, allowing insurers to discriminate against and raise premiums for 1.6 million North Carolinians with preexisting conditions and deny coverage to people with a history of health problems.

  • Under BCRA, “coverage for people with pre-existing conditions would have been more expensive and less accessible” [PolitiFact, 8/13/18]
  • Under Graham-Cassidy, “millions could lose coverage, Medicaid would face cuts comparable to those in earlier repeal bills, and insurers in some states could charge higher premiums to people with pre-existing conditions.” [New York Times, 9/18/17]

Tillis backed both proposals, even urging his colleagues to again try to repeal the Affordable Care Act and gut its popular consumer protections for older Americans, expecting mothers, and people with preexisting conditions after fundraising for vulnerable senators like Tillis had “fallen off a cliff” as big money GOP donors abandoned him and Washington Republicans.

“Thom Tillis is ready to return to the same toxic health care proposals that would have left North Carolinians paying more and gutted protections for preexisting conditions,” NCDP spokesman Robert Howard said. “For Tillis, upending people’s health care and gutting protections families depend on to access care is worth it if it helps his reelection chances and rallies special interests and wealthy donors to his side.”
