NC Farmer: “We are desperate for something to happen. We need help.”

Raleigh – Senator Tillis again surrendered to Donald Trump, this time on the President Trump’s disastrous trade war despite the real costs to North Carolina farmers. Senator Tillis applauded the trade war, tweeting, “@realDonaldTrump is right,” and proclaimed on Fox News that the trade war is “long overdue.”

And while America’s farmers “will see the most pain” from the trade war, “there’s no plan to stop, or even threaten, the president’s tariff regime” from Republican senators like Senator Tillis.

North Carolina “consumers and businesses can expect to feel very quickly the impact of a growing trade war.” About a quarter of NC’s pork products are exported, 15 percent of which goes to China. And soybeans, another major industry in NC, have already seen an 80 percent decline in exports nationwide.

“Everybody is going to feel it,” one hog farmer from Duplin County told WITN in Greenville.

Another Duplin County resident said that farmers are now stuck “between a rock and a hard place” and may be forced to raise prices on American consumers to make ends meet.

NC soybean and grain farmer Lorenda Overman was even more blunt. “We have borrowed from our life insurance policy, that’s how desperate we are. We are desperate for something to happen. We need help.”

“In Senator Tillis and President Trump’s trade war, farmers lose, rural communities lose, and everyday North Carolinians lose, all so Senator Tillis can cozy up to the President,” NCDP spokesperson Robert Howard said in a statement. “Senator Tillis continues to show that he will jump at any chance to stay in Trump’s good graces even if it means hurting our state. North Carolina deserves a Senator that is more concerned with fighting for what’s best for North Carolina’s rural communities than proving his loyalty to Trump.”
