Raleigh – Thom Tillis’ decision to cave to pressure from the White House and far-right activists across the state may threaten up to $530 million in planned military spending for North Carolina, according to a new Pentagon list from Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan.

Included on the chopping block are:

  • water treatment plant improvements and a new health care facility for Camp Lejeune;
  • infrastructure investments at Seymour Johnson AFB;
  • airfield security for Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station; and,
  • construction at Fort Bragg and Charlotte/Douglas IAP.

“Thom Tillis’ vote to support the emergency declaration is a vote to put hundreds of millions for military bases across the state critical to our country’s safety and the health of our local economies on the chopping block,” NCDP spokesman Robert Howard said. “This is a slap in the face to our active duty service members and our veteran community. Tillis chose his political career over our military, and North Carolina will not forget this easily.”

The list included more than $100 million for water treatment plant improvements at Camp Lejeune and airfield security and other work at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in North Carolina. That is the home state to Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who initially said he opposed Trump’s emergency but voted for it.
