Raleigh – Today, the North Carolina Democratic Party filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against Senator Thom Tillis, the Thom Tillis Committee, and the North Carolina Republican Party (NC GOP) for violating federal election law. Specifically, the Tillis campaign and NC GOP violated laws barring foreign nationals from decision making roles in election-related activities and accepting excessive contributions and coordinating with outside independent expenditure groups. Read the full complaint online here.

During the 2014 election, Sen. Tillis’ campaign, the NC GOP, and the John Bolton Super PAC contracted British data-firm, Cambridge Analytica, to provide consulting services. Cambridge Analytica’s political team was primarily comprised of foreign nationals who offered key, strategic consulting services to Sen. Tillis’ campaign and the NC GOP. Both the Tillis campaign and the NC GOP in turn knowingly assisted the foreign nationals in influencing the North Carolina Senate race, a violation of election law.

The Tillis Campaign and the North Carolina Republican Party also accepted illegal and excessive in-kind contributions from and illegally coordinated with the John Bolton Super PAC through Cambridge Analytica. Cambridge Analytica conveyed information to the John Bolton Super PAC that was also used to advise the Tillis Campaign and the NC GOP.

Campaigns and political parties are barred from coordinating with outside, independent expenditure groups, such as the John Bolton Super PAC, raising serious legal and ethical questions for the NC GOP and the Tillis campaign. Each violation should be fully investigated and punished.

“Recent reports detailing how Senator Tillis’ 2014 campaign and the North Carolina Republican Party used foreign nationals in decision-making roles and illegally coordinated with an outside independent expenditure group are troubling and deserve to be investigated under the full authority of the law,” NCDP Chairman Wayne Goodwin said. “Protecting the sanctity of our elections is paramount and any violations must be rooted out and punished to curb future efforts to undermine our elections.”
