Raleigh – Today, the North Carolina Democratic Party announced a record $4 million cash on hand ($3,950,367) heading into the pivotal 2018 General Election, a reflection of the party’s continued resurgence, the enthusiasm among Democratic voters and left-leaning independents, and the growing push for new leadership in the General Assembly.

The party’s financial resources heading into the 2018 General Election season are unprecedented for a midterm election. The “First Quarter Plus” report total is seven times more than the party had at this period in 2014 and 18 times more than in 2010. In the last two midterms (2014 and 2010), the party started the General Election season with $543,257 and $217,973, respectively.

In a sign that Democratic enthusiasm is growing, the party raised nearly $2.1 million from January to April 2018, $700,000 more than raised in the previous six months. The amount raised also dwarfs previous midterm election reports. In Q1 2014, the party raised $687,819; in Q1 2010, it raised $326,689. Thus far in the 2018 cycle, the party has raised more than $5.1 million.

“There’s a blue wave headed for the Tar Heel state,” NCDP Chairman Wayne Goodwin said. “North Carolina Democrats are in the strongest position ever heading into a midterm election, not only with unprecedented resources, but with credible candidates running in every single district for the first time ever. Voters are ready for new leadership in the General Assembly and Democrats are working every single day to make that a reality.”

Today’s unprecedented fundraising haul reflects the enthusiasm and energy among Democrats, which Republican leaders have privately acknowledged “is real.” Earlier this spring, Democrats made history, announcing that a Democrat is running in every single legislative district for the first time ever.

Democrats are backed by Break the Majority, a strategic partnership between Governor Cooper and NCDP to invest resources and expertise in key state level races. Last month, Break the Majority announced the initial targeted Republican districts.
