Vulnerable House Republicans Vote to Ignore SCOTUS & NC Constitution, Pass “Terrible” Gun Law

GOP Votes to Protect Themselves, Advance Gun Law that is “Recipe for Disaster”
Raleigh – This week, vulnerable North Carolina House Republicans thumbed their nose at the U.S. Supreme Court and the state constitution, choosing to instead do the “important work” of relaxing proven gun safety laws over the objection of the state’s law enforcement community.

Rather than swiftly and transparently redraw their illegally gerrymandered districts, as the Middle District mandated and the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously affirmed, the vulnerable members voted along party lines to cancel Governor Cooper’s special session – choosing to “[insult] the people of North Carolina on the flimsiest of grounds.”

Vulnerable Republicans then voted to relax proven gun safety measures, a move that the state’s law enforcement agents said would put them in danger and make it more difficult for them to do their job. According to the President of the Fraternal Order of Police, HB746 is “going to put a lot more guns on the street,” while conservative Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes called the bill a “terrible” idea and “a recipe for disaster.”

“House Republicans made it clear they are more concerned with protecting their own seats than they are with protecting North Carolina’s citizens and law enforcement officers,” said Executive Director Kimberly Reynolds. “Instead of doing their jobs, vulnerable Republicans from across the state would rather make it harder for our state’s police to safely do theirs.”
